I just finished reading Tom Wolfe's Back To Blood. I had read Bonfire of the Vanities and A Man in Full, and thought they were o.k. They both told tales of a rich man losing his fortune, so I liked that about it. I guess Tom Wolfe wanted to break that formula with Back To Blood, but you know what they say, if it's not broke don't fix it.
Bonfire of the Vanities took place in New York. A Man in Full took place in Atlanta. In these books the settings become like characters. Back To Blood took place in Miami, but the city's character was lacking. Wolfe wrote about Hialeah, an all Cuban settlement. He wrote about Biscayne Bay, Fisher Island... According to Wolfe, in Miami, it's the Cubans running things.
I'm glad I've finished the novel. It was so horrible. What a pile of shit. Tom Wolfe tries writing like he is a young man or woman, but he's trapped in the 60's, man. He should write a novel about old people, I think he'd do a better job of it. Using the pages as toilet paper would be disgracing my a-hole. And the book cost $33! Hopefully I can sell it to a used book store.
