A Silver Ring

I bought a ring in Malaysia, it's made of silver and cost $7.  The inscription on the inside says "One ring to rule them all."  So far the only thing I rule are the fruit flies hovering around my garbage can.  They are at my beck and call, but since they are so weak, and so stupid, they won't deliver me anything, not even my slippers.  I actually don't own slippers, but you get it.  I should get a dog.

I will be reading mostly travel books this month including The Beach, by Alex Garland; Stranger in a Strange Land, by Robert Heinlein; The Wayward Bus, by John Steinbach; and The Innocents Abroad, by Mark Twain.  By reading about travel, I don't have to travel, because reading about it is kind of like dreaming about it, except you are at the mercy of some foreign mind, and who knows where they'll take you.

I am reading also, I Am Charlotte Simmons, by Tom Wolfe; Never Let Me Go, by Ishiguro; and Lost in the Meritocracy, by Walter Kirn.  They were all about post-secondary education, about being a clone, about being an independent woman.

Christmas is just around the corner, and we are heading into the darkest days.  Let's stay strong by holding hands in a circle on the lake and kicking our legs into the circle, and circling around, doing something like the can-can.  We can laugh all we want.  I will pretend to be a coyote and chase you into a remote field and howl at you.  Sometimes the darkness wins.
